I AM FOR YOU

BY MIEKO OUCHI

"Wouldn't it be cool, if for once, the girls got the swords? If they got the big fight?"

Mieko Ouchi's play, dedicated to "all the girls who have ever stood on the sidelines watching a fight call", examines the almost-taboo topic of physical violence in young women, and teaches the importance of control and perspective.

Lainie and Mariam are high school students who have it out for each other. When newly appointed drama student teacher, Caddell Morris finds them fighting after school, he offers an unexpected form of discipline. By teaching the girls the art of stage combat, he hopes to help them understand the roots and costs of violence. But when the girls are cast as Mercutio and Tybalt, swords, words, and egos clash. Can they find a way to work together?
